Human Resource Management is more than a collection of workplace policies and processes. It is about understanding people, developing talent, strengthening organizational performance, and ensuring that workplace practices remain fair, effective, and compliant.
These principles shaped the learning experience of Foundation Certificate in Human Resource Management (FCHRM)® Cohort 16, which brought together 25 participants from diverse industries for four sessions of knowledge-sharing, professional exchange, and practical insights into the multifaceted role of HR.
Throughout the program, participants explored how core HR functions work together to support both employee development and organizational goals, guided by practitioners who brought their expertise and industry perspectives into each discussion.
Four Sessions, Four Perspectives on HR
The program began with Ms. Mariliza Arceo, who introduced participants to the Fundamentals of Human Resource Management and Strategic Human Resource Management. The discussion established the foundation for understanding HR not only as an administrative function but also as a strategic partner in aligning workforce capabilities with organizational objectives.
Building on this foundation, Mr. Edrian Clemente explored Learning & Development (L&D) and Organizational Development (OD). Drawing from his professional experience, he emphasized the value of continuous learning in helping employees strengthen their capabilities while enabling organizations to adapt, improve, and grow. His session encouraged participants to consider how intentional learning initiatives can contribute to long-term organizational development.
The focus then shifted to employee performance and engagement with Mr. Marvin Ong, who discussed Performance Management and Total Rewards. His session examined key practices that help organizations establish performance expectations, recognize employee contributions, and connect individual efforts with broader organizational outcomes. These insights highlighted the importance of creating systems that support accountability while fostering employee motivation and engagement.
To complete the program, Atty. Eleazar Ypilan led an in-depth discussion on Philippine Labor Law and Compliance. Through the session, participants gained further perspective on the legal responsibilities involved in managing employment relationships and maintaining compliant workplace practices. The questions raised throughout the discussion underscored the importance of understanding labor regulations and applying them appropriately in professional settings.
Connecting Knowledge to Workplace Practice
While each session focused on a distinct area of HR, the discussions revealed how closely these functions are connected. Strategic HR planning provides direction for workforce initiatives, learning and development builds employee capabilities, performance management reinforces organizational expectations, and labor law compliance helps ensure that employment practices are conducted responsibly.
Together, these areas form an essential foundation for HR professionals who must balance organizational priorities with the needs, rights, and development of employees.
The active participation of Cohort 16 throughout the program also reflected the value of collaborative learning. By engaging with the speakers, raising questions, and exploring different professional perspectives, participants had opportunities to deepen their understanding of HR beyond theoretical concepts and consider how these principles apply in actual workplace situations.
Advancing People-Centered HR
As workplaces continue to evolve, HR professionals must be equipped to navigate changing organizational needs while upholding sound management practices and employee-centered principles. Building this capability begins with a strong understanding of HR fundamentals and a willingness to continuously learn.
Through FCHRM®, the Philippine HR Institute (PHRI)™ supports aspiring and current HR professionals in developing this foundation, bringing together essential HR concepts and insights from industry practitioners to encourage more informed and effective professional practice.
With Cohort 16 completing its learning journey, the program reinforces an important principle: effective HR begins with knowledge, grows through continuous learning, and creates value through the way people are managed, supported, and developed.
